World of Smash: Week #7 ~Sheik~
|
This is weekly thing where I make a quick rundown of each character in the game. I try to describe what the character is like and hopefully it will help people get a general feel for the character and what is all involved with that character.
But there are so many better character FAQs out there! Why bother with this?
That's not the point. Those FAQs are very long, meticulous, in-depth, and they also do not do what I want to accomplish. My weeklies are supposed to be easier to swallow and also add in other info that FAQ's don't sometimes. It's also to get a taste of each character and not to go too far in to smother someone. However, it's also meant to be comprehensive so that the reader will understand what the character is about. It is also meant to lead into being good with the character; in other words, it's supposed to be an introduction, like an introductory class in college for an undecided major. Also, if you're looking at a character and want to know more, you don't need to read a ton and go searching a ton because I've pretty much done the work for you because I even include who the masters are and also the best guides out there, not to mention a list of videos pertaining to the character.
It may end up being long but I've labelled each section so you can skip to what you actually want to read because there is some extra stuff you may not need (like background of character).
If you find yourself not understanding some terminology, you might want to go here to learn the terms.
This week's character is S h e i k, From the Shadows
Tier position: 1st of Top
Character Aerodynamic: Moderate Fast Faller
Character Background:
Long long ago, an entity was formed from a phrase that involved the heavens. This entity came to be known as Nintendo.
Many years later, a being known as Miyamoto and his group would go to create a new world in the universe of Nintendo. Shiguru Miyamoto provided his wisdom of game design and story. Hiroshi Yamauchi provided the power of money. Koji Kondo provided the courage of music. When their work was complete, they left behind a relec. It was a game known as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
In the game, the princess known as Zelda turns into a character named Sheik to hide her identity. When Zelda was added into Melee, the game developer, HAL, decided to make use of this fact and allow for Zelda to change into Sheik.
Character history:
Right from the get go, it was pretty obvious Sheik was a really good character. As time progressed, it just got worse and worse. At one point, it was thought that Sheik was so broken that she would potentially ruin the game, especially at TG 2.
As time went on, other character's games developed more. In a talk with Captain Jack of Japan, he said his list of top characters, which is somewhat regarded as the "Japanese tier list", where he lists Fox above Sheik. This does not mean that Sheik is considered bad by any means. She is still one of the dominating forces in the game.
One of the theories of why Sheik is so good could be attributed to many things, but one could be the fact that the designers intended for her to be used in conjunction with Zelda, which not many do.
Character description: Think "Ninja"
Sheik can be played effectively both offensively and defensively. This makes her a very daunting opponent to be up against. She also is very effective at racking up damage with combos and by simply getting in hits. Her shield grab is extremely effective and she is quick with her moves and nimble and fast in her movement. The only thing she really lacks is a lot of power but she makes up for it with not only everything else she can do but also by the fact that the killing moves she has are extremely devistating. Fair can actually end up being much worse than a shine spike and usmash and dsmash can both get in kills. Her recovery also does not cover that much distance although its movement is odd and it does allow her to be both invincible and invulnurable for a short period of time. If she really needs distance, she can always transform into Zelda, although for pure Sheik players, it may not be worth it to do so.
Mastering Difficulty: Easy
Sheik is one of the easiest characters to learn in the game. Her moves are very straightforward. They're also fast, have leeway, have good hitboxes, quick and they flow. Combined, it makes her reletively simple to pick up. This is not to say she can't be played at a higher level, which she obviously can be. Also, there are a few things that are tricky about her, including her recovery, her needles, and certain other more advanced tactics, but not much is really too tricky.
Combo Ability: Spectacular
Saying Sheik has good combo ability is an understatement. She is a demon. Her moves are quick. Most have either short knockback or set up nicely for an ariel. She also has a dash attack that lunges her forward. Plus she can move really fast and effectively around the stage. Add needles to help get into combos or continue them and it really gets rediculous from there.
Recoverablilty: Moderate
Sheik's recovery is definitly not the best in the game. For one, it has short range. Also, it is slow. If you are ever forced to land on the stage, it may be hard to stay on because of these two things. However, one thing that it does have is the "tricky factor". She is invulnurable so she has a defense against spikes. The startup can also be aimed slightly, which may give the Sheik a little bit of room to avoid attacks, not to mention to hit them with the actual recovery if they're going out for the actual recovery. She can grab the ledge before the explosion and she also has a nice stall tactic on the edge as well. From the edge, she can fair if the enemy is close. Nair is also an option. Her ledge attack is actually pretty good and has decent range. Ledgedashing can potentially turn the game around depending on the situation. She also has needles which she can use on occasion. If the Sheik ever needs to, she also has the help of Zelda's long reaching recovery as well, although this forces players to be able to play Zelda, at least for a little while.
Kill Factor: Above Average
Sheik is not the strongest character in the game. She does have USmash, which is a vertical killer. She also has Dsmash, which is good as well. Her fair is also exeedingly devistating as an edgeguard and is an excellent horizontal killer. Her needles can also mess up potential recoveries. That's pretty much it for her kill game though. It's good but one of the things is that it really relies on setups, which are not always avaliable. Without setups, it usually takes higher percentages to actually get the kill. She does have a pretty good edgeguard though.
Key tactics:
Combos combos combos. She is fast. Remember to L-cancel and follow the opponent around. Don't give them a chance to escape. Learn the knockbacks and string the moves together. You can even set up into combos.
You can play her defensively as well. Her sheild grabbing is excellent and you can also crouch cancel into a combo or setup.
Fair. It can kill people. It's a pseudospike. Very dangerous. After using it, especially off the stage or at higher percentages, you'll understand its power.
Dsmash is also very useful. It can be used as a killer as well as an edgeguarder. It can also rack up damage.
Needles are a huge part of Sheik's game. One can block a fully charged blast from Samus. They can be charged up and held for later with L/R/Z and can mess up recoveries, allow you to instantly change directions in the air (without the lag of doing an attack), rack up damage, and set up combos and other bad situations that your opponent does not want to be in.
Sheik can also chain grab much of the cast. Jump cancelled grabbing is crucial to this.
She has a good ground game and a good arial game. Do everything you're supposed to do for other characters and know how each of your moves work.

Notes:
I had to stop myself from doing couple of things. One of them was simply putting "lol" in the combo ability part. In the end, I thought I should put a little bit more thought into it .
This wasn't too hard, I don't think. Sheik isn't really that tough to learn so things went pretty smoothly. That is, until I had to watch those videos and do the "character masters" sections. The same problem with the Falco one ended up happening but I tried to be a little bit more focused this time.
It's nice actually knowing how to use Sheik. Before I did this, I had no idea what I was doing with the character. I like Zelda but without the Sheik part, it sorta feels incomplete.
I realize that Week 6 is still on the first page. However, I think I need to move things along. Everybody's pretty much read it anyway and the only reason why it's being bumped is because of votes.
Anyway, again, enjoy .
Next week will be Zelda. The week after that will finish off this tri-thing of Shiek and Zelda.

How could you not mention back air as a kill move? The thing has even more range than Jiggs' back, and there aren't many attacks that can even go through that in the first place. Not to mention that it has nice knockback, only problem being that the attack's trajectory isn't anything special like forward air's low angle.

Awww ****.
I failed.
I also forgot to mention another similar move, uair.
*Goes to hang himself*
Edit: Oh btw, thanks everyone, including WorldOrder for pointing that stuff out. It's too late now but Uair and Bair have pretty decent knockback and depending on character and percentage, can quite nicely kill. I probably didn't mention it because I mostly use it for comboing. I rarely use it for killing since I'm usually trying to kill them with fair, which usually kills at much lower percentages. But yeah, don't count out her other two nice ariels.

One thing Sheik can do to rack up damage is the chain grab, chain grab, chain grab. The worst (or best) part is, it can go on for over 50% damage.
