This is weekly thing where I make a quick rundown of each character in the game. I try to describe what the character is like and hopefully it will help people get a general feel for the character and what is all involved with that character.
But there are so many better character FAQs out there! Why bother with this?
That's not the point. Those FAQs are very long, meticulous, in-depth, and they also do not do what I want to accomplish. My weeklies are supposed to be easier to swallow and also add in other info that FAQ's don't sometimes. It's also to get a taste of each character and not to go too far in to smother someone. However, it's also meant to be comprehensive so that the reader will understand what the character is about. It is also meant to lead into being good with the character; in other words, it's supposed to be an introduction, like an introductory class in college for an undecided major. Also, if you're looking at a character and want to know more, you don't need to read a ton and go searching a ton because I've pretty much done the work for you because I even include who the masters are and also the best guides out there, not to mention a list of videos pertaining to the character.
It may end up being long but I've labelled each section so you can skip to what you actually want to read because there is some extra stuff you may not need (like background of character).
If you find yourself not understanding some terminology, you might want to go here to learn the terms.
This week's character is Link, the Hylian Hero
Tier position: 2nd of Mid Tier
Character Aerodynamic: Moderate Fast Faller
Character Background: In all of The Legend of Zelda games, created by Shigeru Miyamoto, there has always been a protagonist, canonistically named "Link" for his "link" to the players who control him. More specifically, the SSB Link is the adult version of Link hailing from the oldest (known) Hyrule in the Ocarina of Time. He premiered in the first installment of the series with his sword, a bomb, and his boomerang, which took some liberties with his real character but nobody cared; the boomerang was too good to take out due to "game correctness". Nintendo would be nuts if they didn't include him in the DX installment of the game and Link made a return, coming in with his bow and arrows and a shield that actually worked. His moveset was altered but it was likely for the better, considering some of his less usable moves are the ones that most resemble their N64 counterparts.
Character history: When the DX version first came out, Link was quite a popular tournament character, probably due to his moveset and all of his extra additions, including his hookshot ariel and his shield that could block a fully charged beam. As time went on, however, he fell out of favor due to shield grabbing becoming less and less effective. An even bigger blow to Link's popularity happened as the speed in which the game was being played at increased more and more. Although no slowpoke, he didn't quite have the speed others had and was a bit laggy to be any match in a real competetive atmosphere. Although he fell out of favor, he is still a favorite amongst newcomers, and Link players who have stuck with him are still trying improve his game to make up for his speed handicap, much like how Ganondorf did.
One of the defining moments of more recent Smash history for Link is the emergence of The GERM and his videos Linkology and The Hylian Nightmare, proving that the whole "Link is too slow" business was much too exaggerated. These videos brought a lot of attention back to Link and brought in a surge of new users and intensified the resolve of Link players.
Character description: Heavy, solid, but acrobatic
Although no slowpoke, Link isn't exactly mister Speedy Gonzoles. Although his game can involve speed, oftentimes, his game consists of utilizing all of his tools to his benefit, just like in the Legend of Zelda games. He has several things he can do in many situations in close combat, including to rack up damage and to knock away. He can also, if the player so desires, set up devistating combos. He is also one of the few who can grab from a distance, which can open up a whole new avenue of play yet also open him up for a world of hurt. His moves range from the high priority and soft and quick to the powerful and laggy. If not fighting with the blade, he can use his arsenal of projectiles to both confuse and hurt the opponent. Link has something for virtually every situation and is one of the most adaptable characters in the game. He is the Red Mage of Super Smash Brothers, which explains his placing on the tier list. Like a real Red Mage, his forte comes in at being able to do many things and sometimes even at the same time and being able to whip out something out of the blue. This, unfortunatly, also makes him a somewhat difficult character to pick up because he has to be played in a way that maximizes his strengths and minimizes his weaknesses much moreso than other characters in the game. He is also somewhat heavy and this both compliments his playstyle and allows him to live longer and crouch cancel more effectively.
Mastering Difficulty: Moderate
Link's moveset, while not too farfetched, takes a little while to get used to since each move works in slightly odd ways that make them a bit unwieldy or unintuitive in some manner. An example is that most of his powerful attacks actually have less knockback and using them at lower percentages can have dire consequences if one isn't careful. Because of the way he generally works, needing to maximize benefits and minimize as much as possible his weaknesses, he is somewhat difficult to get a real grip on. Of course, he isn't the worst character to get used too and can actually be played pretty straightforward with tweaking here and there.
Combo Ability: Good
Combos are not Link's bread an butter. Of course, nothing is really his bread and butter because he has to do everything. As a result, his combo game isn't Fox-level but it certainly is good enough so that he can do some pretty amazing chains, especially after grabs.
Recoverablilty: Good
A major improvement over its N64 counterpart, Link's recovering game has greatly improved. His jumps are pretty normal like most characters but he also has a countinual damaging B+up that stretches to each side and can grab the ledge from behind. If B+up isn't an option, Link always has the ability to hookshot, which can save him in many situations. Sweetspotting with the hookshot can lead to instant grab to the ledge. His from-ledge game is not bad either, having his nair, fair, dair, and uair all possible moves as well as boomerang and if he has it, his bomb. Speaking of bombs, if Link is knocked too far out, all hope is not lost. All he needs to take out a bomb, throw it in the air and B+Up into it to get another B+Up and get more horizontal recovery. Of course, I make it sound easy when it's absolutely not. But he has that option there.
Kill Factor: Good
Projectile spam can help mess up a possible recovery, although it has to be used with intelligence to avoid helping the opponent. Link can nair to hookshot at the side of a level to help disrupt possible recoveries, which can be done with bombdropping as well. He gets big points for his spin pseudo-spike or simply his "spin spike". Even when not used as a spin-spike, his Sword Spin is a good enough KOer by itself, not to mention his devistating dair.
Key tactics:
As noted, his projectiles are a big part of his game. When one uses Link, they must have a firm grasp of what his projectiles are and what they can do. Of the things the projectiles can be used for, they can be used to get in quick damage, start combos, approach enemies, set up optimal situations and so forth. It all depends on your mindgames.
Although his "in the fray" presence is not the best in the game, it can stand up on its own, especially coupled with his long range prowess and his various other tools. Learn his moves well and know when which move is optimal for which situation.
His hookshot is also very important for easing the pain when caught in a moment of vulnurability to being a viable recovering strategy.
Again, he's not the fastest character in the game but that does not mean you should move slow yourself.
Be meticulous but don't stand in one place. Although he has the worst wavedash in the game, do not neglect it; you'll be surprised at what it can do, especially if you "pulse walk".
Character Masters:
Germ - He's a speedster; you'd expect that from a guy from the crew DBR. He is a big comboer as far as Link goes. He tries to squeeze every ounce of speed as he can out of the guy. Somewhat of an aggressive playing style, there are things you can learn from watching his videos.
Lord HDL - This man knows his stuff, demonstrated by utilizing everything he can in the character moveset. Hailing from Puerto Rico, he has probably had the most success of any American Link player. Although it may be due to location, do not underestimate him. His style, according to him, is not based on stats but through experience and feel. He also has one of the best Link guides on the net.
Aniki - The most well known Japanese Link player and he doesn't do to badly in tournaments. His style is very graceful yet deadly. Unfortunatly, he has since switched to being a Samus but he will still be remembered for the time that he played Link.
SS4Ricky - This guy apparently really put Link's range to the test. He's not really all that well known however due to him not really having much forum presence and not releasing very many videos. However, top players recognize him as a solid Link player. You can see his mug shot in the East Vs West, regional crew battle (FC3).
Zarelid - Again, this guy isn't as well-known as the first three Link players but he is also recognized as a solid Link player.

Yeah so this is the first one. I released it a bit early since it's really just an upgraded repeat. Hopefully, this series... I don't know. Hoping it goes well.
Oh, and don't be surprised if I miss a week or something. During midterms, for example, I'm probably not going to have as much time to dedicate to these as possible. I won't skip week numbers but actual weeks may be skipped, especially since I've had to do an overhaul on these things and have to go back and change the ones I already have done.
Also, it might not be coming out each week due to me trying to learn the character. Although Mewtwo isn't hard to learn, he doesn't exactly fit me like my main characters do. Although I'm sure I'll be able to release his next week, other characters may have to be delayed. If I miss the post date, I'll try to release it as soon as possible.
Anyway, here's the kickoff. Enjoy.

But for that you need at least 305% damage :P
Another thing you could do, if your hit up high enough, hold on to the bomb, execute your ^B attack and all avalable jumps (while holding onto the bomb) and if you are high enough, the bomb will explode, and give you another ^B, or grapple.

Going along the lines of what Juggleguy said, a numerical ranking of traits (speed, weight, height, jump, power, etc.) would be nice. Something that readers could use to easily compare his traits with that of other characters.

Lol .
On a serious note, I only got into the SWF scene since August so I'm not going to know all of that. I almost missed putting SS4Ricky and Zarelid in. I've seen Kubuu once since I joined and he had a Donkey Kong avatar . Thanks for the info though, I think I'll try to get more info on him just for my sake.

Ah, darn, that's actually a nice idea. Unfortunatly, I want each and every one of these to be the same and I've already done it for link. Fortunatly, I have the character description section so all that should be pretty much covered. Thanks for the suggestions though!
I've already got the order I'm doing the characters in so you'll just have to be patient with me. Don't worry though, I'll get to them eventually.
Thanks again, everyone, for the compliments!

Thanks for the further compliment(s) .
Also, Link's bomb jump works in a couple of ways:
At low percentages:
1) Take out a bomb, Sword Spin and hope that the bomb explodes at the peak of his Sword Spin. This allows you get gain a bit more horizontal distance without losing any vertical. This is extremely situational. Feel lucky if this ever happens to you.
2) Take out a bomb, throw it up, sword spin into it. If done right, your bomb will hit you, you might gain a little horizontal and you'll have another sword spin. Either you can sword spin again or you can air recover and dodge diagonal up and hookshot. Then you can follow that with a swordspin if so desired. This is hard to do though because you have to make the bomb explode instead of simply knocking it away.
At rediculously high percentages:
1) Take out a bomb, throw it up, sword spin into it, pop up into the air and gain vertical height. I GUESS you can do this but when are you ever going to be at that high of a percentage to make use of it?
